Your Mother’s Day Facebook Message

Mother's Day

Your Mother’s Day Facebook Message

This Sunday is Mother’s Day. So you still have a couple of days to get a card. You also have a couple of days to get your post ready for your organization’s Mother’s Day Facebook Post.

Since you aren’t paying your volunteers, recognition is your main currency. You want to thank your volunteers as often as possible – but you don’t want to do it in a way that seems forced, or insincere. This is where holidays come in. It’s a natural reason to thank people, and recognize what the do for you. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, etc.are huge opportunities.

Crafting Your Message

You want a message that’s sincere, applicable to your organization, and relevant to your specific volunteers. I wrote The Facebook post below when I was working for the Boy Scouts. It was seen by thousands of people and was one of my most liked and shared posts of the year.

The secret was that I wrote something fitting and sincere, and “tagged” as many Scouting mothers as I could in the picture (you’re usually limited to 50). I’d limit it to members of your organization and supporters. You want to make your volunteers look good in front of their friends, and let their friends know that this is the sort of person who’s involved in your organization. Be specific in ways that they help your organization. If you can find a way to be funny, while still being reverent, so much the better.

Next, the image should be related to your organization. Stay away from the random pictures (like um, the one at the top of the page). It should feel specific to your organization. If 115 other groups could post the same picture for the same effect, then you’re wasting your time. Remember, your thanks should remind people of what’s best about your organization.

You can go with photographs, words, or symbols – but you want to make them feel something.

This shouldn’t take you a long time to do. It will have the dual effect of making your volunteers feel good and getting some free publicity for your organization, as this will be a popular post that show up on the Facebook walls for the friends of the people you tag.

Lastly, I’d set the timing for the post for sometime between 7 and 9 am on Sunday morning. You want it to hit around Mother’s Day breakfast to get the most bang for your buck.

Thank You
